The biggest thing that makes us different is our philosophical principles:
- Treat/care for the patient not their diagnosis.
- Find the cause of your symptoms or primary complaint and address the cause through chiropractic care, functional nutrition, brain-based therapy, diet and lifestyle modification, therapy, and exercise.
- Provide Answers—Promote Health!
Let me explain what this means. When someone is given a diagnosis like you have “fibromyalgia”, this initially may be good for the patient because they now feel they have an answer, but it can also be a huge problem.
First of all having a diagnosis is a label, i.e. fibromyalgia or migraine sufferer. It says you have all the symptoms of this condition but what it doesn’t tell us is what is causing the condition! If you don’t know what is causing the condition, how can you correct the cause?
Treatment is focused on giving medications to suppress symptoms. This may seem great in the beginning but anyone who has been down this road knows that the medications lose their effectivness with time and create side effects that often require more medications.
So back to the the diagnosis label. Let’s say a person is diagnosed with fibromyalgia. They are essentially placed in the fibromyalgia treatment box. Everyone in that box gets the same treatment. Now the treatment focus is off the patient and on the diagnosis. This model isn’t working.
The reason this model doesn’t work is because we are all different. If you I placed 10 people in a room with fibromyalgia or back pain, what is causing each person’s condition will probably be different. They all have lived different lives and what is CAUSING each person to have fibromyalgia is different so the treatment for each person will likely be different.
If the cause is different, shouldn’t their care be different?
If you have headaches or migraines, there are lots of potential causes of you having a headache or migraine. The easy answer is to say “you are a migraine sufferer, and here is the medication for migraine sufferers”.
Is that what you want?
Wouldn’t you rather know what is causing your condition? Wouldn’t you rather know how to correct what is causing your migraines than to be a victim and the only solution is some medication?
I know I would.
And that’s’ what makes us different. I want to find out:
- Why is this happening?
- What is the mechanism?
- How do I help the patient correct this problem?
I want to be able to tell you, you are sufferring with migraines and they are being caused by these factors; X, Y, Z. What we need to do to correct factors X, Y, and Z is; balance blood sugar, remove inflammatory foods, etc.
I do this by getting to the basics of what causes health challenges: physical stress, chemical stress, and emotional stress and the impact these 3 general types of stress have on the nervous system, function of the body, and a person’s health. I use some cutting edge concepts of:
- Functional Neurology
- Functional Blood Chemistry
- Functional Nutrition
- Functional Orthopedic Assessment
- Pro Adjuster Spinal Analysis & Chiropractic Adjustments
- Metabolic Mapping
- Brain-Based Therapy
By using these tools and techniques to evaluate and support the person, we can identify what is causing someone to have diminished health and leading to their symptoms. Using functional assessment we can identify when the body is not functioning correctly and address the problems sometimes before disease is even identified.
Many times people go from doctor to doctor knowing something is wrong, but their doctors cannot identify what is wrong (can’t find disease).
Has this ever happened to you?
In traditional health care the focus is only looking for disease. If no disease is present–than nothing is done. If no diagnosis can be given, no treatment may be provided or sometimes your doctor says you look healthy, just take xyz medication when your symptoms get bad and that should do. That’s like telling your mechanic you think you have a slow leak in your tire and he tells you to just fill it up when it is low.
By now I think you get my point. If you are looking for an office that:
- Cares for the person, not their diagnosis
- Looks for the cause of your symptoms
- Is focused on maximizing your health
I would and have recommended Dr. Balcavage to everyone. We need to have more doctors like Dr. Balcavage. I drove over 5 hours one way each trip and it was worth it. Thanks Again— Dr. B!!
